20 Powerful Daily Affirmations That Could Change Your Life
The Power Of The Positive Affirmation
With the rise of personal growth content and as self-development increasingly taking center stage in our lives, the use of strong affirmations has become extremely popular.
As it turns outs, there’s a lot of science to back up exactly how a simple set of positive words can dramatically improve your mind and body.
In this article, we’ll cover what positive affirmations are and their potent effects on the human brain. We’ll go on to explain the ways you can use them to create more love, health, and general well being in your business and personal life.
We’ll also be sharing our Top 20 Positive Mindvalley Affirmations as well as the 3-step process on how to go about creating your own for any situation life throws at you.
The Definition Of A Positive Affirmation
Positive affirmations are so much more than feel-good quotes on corny memes. In short, affirmations are statements that are used and repeated to encourage and uplift the person speaking them. And they work because they’re written in the language of the brain using a specific formula.
3 Elements Of Successful Affirmations
It turns out, our brains are pretty strict and straightforward about their linguistic rules. Here are the guidelines:
1) Don’t use past or future tenses. Positive affirmations are always in the present. If you see a positive affirmation that says ” I will…,” ” I used to…” or ” I’m going to…” then this is NOT an affirmation. Your brain will only ever optimally respond to positive present tense affirmations such as ” I am calm. “
2) Positive affirmations only include positive words. If you see a ‘positive’ affirmation that has words like ” don’t,” ” can’t” or ” won’t,” it’s not positive! It takes your brain a lot of extra work to evoke meaning from negative statements as it is wired to seek out positive instruction. E.g. – ” I’m never worried” to ” I’m always calm.”
3) Speak confidently, as if your positive affirmation were true – a hard, solid fact. Statements that contain words like ” might” and ” could” aren’t nearly as powerful as statements that contain words like ” am” and ” do“. E.g. – ” I could be calm in every situation” vs. ” I am calm in every situation.” Your brain will respond to this even if secretly you don’t believe it to be accurate. When you come across an affirmation that makes you squirm in discomfort, it’s a good sign that it’s exactly the affirmation you need to repeat.
The Language Of The Brain
Remember how we said that you shouldn’t use the past or future tense when you’re creating an affirmation? That’s because everything that happens is happening in the present moment from your brain’s point of view.
When you think, your brain processes the information literally and prepares you for the action that should immediately follow the thought.
For example, if you think to yourself, ” I’m going to have an amazing time on my date this weekend,” your brain essentially hears ‘ amazing date ‘ and starts firing off all the connections to prepare you for this amazing date to ensure its amazing-ness – mentally organizing which clothes you’ll wear, what you’ll say, how it will feel, etc.
The Dark Side Of Affirmations
Moreover, it only understands positive commands. Have you ever had an emotional experience and told yourself, ” don’t cry,” only to find that you’re sobbing even more? There are actually two things happening in the brain that make phrases like ” don’t cry ” totally counterproductive.
First, when you tell yourself ” don’t cry,” you are giving your brain two different commands. The first command is ‘ don’t‘ and the second is ‘ cry ‘.
You can process the two words together and consciously understand their meaning, but your brain hears the word ‘ cry‘ and the subconscious begins to activate the neural connections for that command.
Unfortunately, after all that work, you haven’t given your brain an action to take instead of crying. In the end, you’re essentially telling yourself to cry, over and over again.
How To Instruct Your Brain For Success
The next time you’re in a situation where you want to experience the opposite emotion, think of that opposite emotion and command yourself to do that instead.
Instead of, ” don’t cry,” try, ” I am calm,” instead and see what happens.
Remember, your brain is a creature of habit, always looking for instructions, and is eager to set you up for success – all you have to do is instruct it in a language it understands, and keep repeating it. This is why positive affirmations are so powerful and consequently uncover the secret to positive thinking.
